Unshackled
It’s the way Ritsuka sometimes swirls across the grass, almost like a butterfly, that makes Soubi’s heart ache. The way he smiles, just for himself or Soubi or maybe even no one in particular. The way his hair is tousled by the wind. The way his quiet giggling rings through the air.
Sometimes Soubi wants to turn around then, to look away, to close his eyes at the sight. Sometimes he does.
He can’t quite explain what it is that makes him react this way, after all Ritsuka doesn’t do anything, except for something most children like to do.
Maybe that is Soubi’s problem.
It’s not a real problem, it just makes him sad. And guilty. Every time he sees Ritsuka like that, like the child he is, he thinks that it is something that’s constantly taken away from the boy, something every child should have the right to do. Because after all, that is just what Ritsuka is: a child. Or at least that’s what Ritsuka should but can’t be because he isn’t allowed to act like any other twelve year old.
And when Ritsuka acts like that, free and unbound, Soubi can’t help but think that he’s exactly as guilty as his mother, who thinks that she’s spoiling and coddling “her Ritsuka” and perhaps sometimes even has every intention to do so, but is in fact doing the very opposite. Maybe Soubi is even worse than that. He does the same thing, taking his freedom away from Ritsuka, but he does so willingly and deliberately. Maybe that’s unforgivable, and one day Ritsuka will notice what Soubi has done to him, and then... will just turn away and leave him. Soubi won’t blame him if he does.
“Soubi!” Ritsuka calls excitedly running up to him, and tugging him by his sleeve. “Let’s make memories!”
And Soubi just says yes because he wants to, but out of far more selfish reasons than Ritsuka will ever know. Ritsuka will print the photos for him later, and Soubi will keep them. And then the day Ritsuka will realize he was used and turn away, Soubi will have something to cling to like a lifeline.
Maybe Soubi is the one who doesn’t want to forget.
